Microsoft Integrates DeepSeek’s AI Model on Azure and GitHub

Microsoft has now integrated the R1 artificial intelligence model from Chinese startup DeepSeek into its Azure cloud computing platform and GitHub developer tools. In the catalog of models on these platforms, the R1 will join more than 1,800 other models provided by Microsoft.

This is in line with DeepSeek’s recent launching of a free AI assistant, one claimed to operate with significantly less data and cost than those of many existing services. The assistant quickly gained traction and exceeded the downloads of competitor ChatGPT in the U.S., alarming tech investors.

This move is part of Microsoft’s strategy to diversify its AI offerings to reduce dependency on OpenAI, ChatGPT’s creator. The company has been integrating both in-house and third-party AI models to enhance its flagship AI product, Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft has also revealed that customers will soon be able to run the R1 model locally on Copilot+ PCs, eliminating possible privacy and data-sharing concerns.

However, the fact DeepSeek would keep user information on servers in China could be a stumbling block to its adoption in the U.S. market. In an associated report, Bloomberg News reported that Microsoft and OpenAI are believed to investigate whether data relating to OpenAI’s technology was surreptitiously obtained by a faction associated with DeepSeek.

The swift ascension of DeepSeek has prompted alarming retaliatory moves from other contenders in the sector. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at accelerating product releases, culminating in Tuesday’s launch of a customized version of ChatGPT for U.S. government agencies. During this period, China’s Alibaba also announced a release in Wednesday, coinciding with that day being the very first day of the lunar new year, which might be an unusual date for such an event.
