ISS Crew-6 reaches home: NASA
The return of Crew-6 team NASA marks the end of a historic mission that lasted for six months on the International Space Station (ISS). The four astronauts – Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg of NASA, Sultan Al Neyadi of the UAE, and Andrey Fedyaev of Roscosmos – splashed down safely in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, on September 4, 2023. They had launched on March 2, 2023, on board the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft named Endeavour, which also served as their return vehicle.

During their stay on the ISS, they conducted various scientific experiments in the microgravity environment of the station, working on a wide variety of topics. Some of the experiments they performed or supported are:
- ISS External Microorganisms: This project aimed to collect samples of bacteria and fungi from surfaces on the outside of the station to see if microbes can survive and spread in space. This could help us understand the potential dangers of human contamination of other environments, especially when looking for signs of life beyond Earth.
- Tissue Chips: These are devices that contain human cells and mimic human organs such as the heart. They can be used to test out new treatments like drugs and to see how organs respond to the space environment without having to perform experiments on real people. Two heart-related experiments tested out drugs for protecting the heart during spaceflight, which could also be useful for developing new treatments for cardiac disease on Earth.
- Immunity Assay: This experiment tested out the effects of spaceflight on cellular immune functions, using a new type of test tube developed for microgravity. The results could help us understand how spaceflight affects the human immune system and how to prevent or treat infections and diseases in space and on Earth.
- Solid Fuel Ignition and Extinction (SoFIE): This experiment used a hardware insert for the station’s Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR) to study how things burn in space, depending on factors like airflow and pressure. This is useful for developing safer space technologies and could also help develop firefighting equipment on Earth as well.
In addition to these experiments, the Crew-6 astronauts also worked on tasks like upgrading the ISS systems and performing maintenance. They also welcomed several visiting vehicles and crews, including SpaceX’s Crew-7 mission, which brought four new crew members to the station in August 2023. They also received cargo vehicles from SpaceX and Northrop Grumman, which delivered supplies, equipment, and more science investigations.
The Crew-6 astronauts also served as flight engineers for Expedition 68 and 69, working alongside their colleagues from NASA, JAXA, and Roscosmos. They participated in various educational and outreach activities, such as answering questions from students and media, sharing photos and videos of their life in space, and celebrating cultural events and holidays.
The Crew-6 mission was the sixth crewed flight for SpaceX under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which aims to provide safe and reliable transportation to and from the orbiting laboratory. The program also enables more research time and opportunities on the station, which benefits humanity and prepares us for future exploration missions.
The Crew-6 astronauts returned to Earth after spending 186 days in space, completing 2,976 orbits around Earth and traveling 78.8 million miles. Their landing was delayed by a day due to poor weather conditions caused by Hurricane Idalia. Their spacecraft splashed down at night, making it the first nighttime landing of a U.S. crewed spacecraft since Apollo 8 in 1968.
