Eight children buried under landslide in Pakistan.
A series of floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains have claimed the lives of at least 50 people in Pakistan since the end of June, according to officials. Among the victims were eight children who were buried under a landslide in Shangla district of northern Pakistan on Thursday, while they were playing cricket during a break in the rain. The monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, brings vital rainfall to South Asia, but also causes widespread destruction and death. Pakistan’s second-largest city, Lahore, experienced record-breaking rainfall on Wednesday, leaving many areas submerged and without power or water. The Meteorological Department has warned of more intense rains and possible flooding in the catchment areas of Punjab’s major rivers in the coming days. Scientists have said that climate change is making the monsoon rains more erratic and severe, posing a threat to millions of people in the region.
